Far Cry 4 Lead’s ‘Personal’ Project Greenlit by Ubisoft

November 19, 2014 by Stephen Daly

With Far Cry 4 now available, the project's creative director Alex Hutchinson has revealed that his next project has already been approved by Ubisoft.

"I've got clearance along with a bunch of people from AC3 and AC4 to go off and do something new after [Far Cry 4]," Hutchinson revealed in an interview with CVG.

"The challenge then is to keep costs down and make something that competes at a high level, without saying 'we need a thousand people for a new IP!'"

Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat said he encourages "personal" projects, and says there's room for such games in the 2,500 people team.

"For me it's important for projects like Child of Light and Far Cry: Blood Dragon to exist and to know that there is a place for them here," Mallat commented.

"It's also important for those projects not to be suffocated at the beginning with high-level objectives. It's a question of growing talent inside the company and giving them a chance. It allows us to try new things without breaking the balance financially."

Prior to Far Cry 4, Hutchinson worked on the rather cooly received Assassin's Creed 3, but he's keen to stress that there's still a long way to go before the game sees public release. Projects including Blood Dragon and Ubisoft Montpellier's Valient Heart began life under similar circumstances however, and there's a good chance the game will pass Ubisoft's editorial team review process.

Far Cry 4 is out on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, and you can discover one of the game's more notable Easter Eggs here.
