Destiny 2 is Currently in Development, Says Activision Publishing CEO

November 5, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

Destiny 2 has been anounced, which comes with a number of implications.

If you were hoping that Destiny would turn into a multi-year bonanza of gunfire and punching people in the face as a Titan, then we're sorry to say that you're going to be quite disappointed to hear that Activision and Bungie are already hard at work on Destiny 2. Given the fact that the publisher and developer have a ten year publishing deal, this doesn't come as a huge surprise. That said, the promises of longevity and strong post-launch support do come in to question when this type of news starts to make its way around town. If Bungie is so hard at work on the next entry into the series, how can they realistically focus on making Destiny better? Unless the content is already on the disc or they held the game release back to develop more content before Destiny's release, we don't see how this is possible. Knowing Activision, they're going to want as much out of Bungie as possible before their ten year publishing deal is done.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed this information during a post earnings financial call earlier yesterday. Bungie apparently has a Lord of the Rings style narrative planned for Destiny and its sequels. It's also been announced that there are plans for multiple entries into the Destiny universe, so it will be interesting to see how well Bungie handles such a tight development schedule. Hopefully, they retain the same quality that we've come to expect from their team.

Destiny currently has 9.5 million active users who spend an average of three hours in game each day. The series is certainly poised for success.
