If I remember correctly, sometime before Assassin's Creed: Black Flag came out, Ubisoft announced that they would be pushing their development teams to make one Creed title per year. While they've certainly stuck to that notion since, it appears that the cash cow of this series is much more lucrative than they once thought. The mega-publisher is set to add more development time to its schedule, dedicated only to the Assassin's Creed series.
Only one entry into the Assassin's Creed Chronicles series has been named so far. Dubbed "China," the side-scrolling action title will be the first of many, according to a recent interview with Assassin's Creed Unity creative director Alex Amancio.
"We really liked the side-scrolling idea, like Mark of the Ninja, and we thought it would be a really great way to explore some of the other universes we've created,"said Amancio.
"One thing that's really cool is that every one of the chapters of this game will be in the art style representative of that era in time. This is why Shao Jun's game is like Chinese ink – very black and red."
"Once we have other characters and timeframes the art style will completely change to match that specific character."
We think that this is a really novel idea to approaching game development. While there will obviously be some similarities gameplay-wise between entries into the Assassin's Creed literature, different art styles and colors will certainly work to change the experience from iteration to iteration.
The video near the end of this Assassin's Creed: Unity trailer shows off a short gameplay segment of China.
