3DS Firmware 9.0.0-20U Adds Menu Themes

October 7, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Have a taste of New 3DS-like customization on your old 3DS.

A week ago, Nintendo updated the Wii U to allow folder organization, finally bringing the console up to feature parity with the 3DS! Too bad 3DS doesn't want to share the spotlight, because a new firmware update this morning pushes the handheld into the lead once again. Firmware 9.0.0-20U allows users to customize their main menu with themes that can be purchased from the eShop.

Yes, these are the themes that have been the talk of the community since the New 3DS revision was revealed. Thankfully, they work on older 3DS models too. As part of the update, a redesigned "Home Menu Settings" button appears in the top left corner of the Home screen, and from there you can select one of five pre-installed basic color themes. If you want something a little more detailed, you can visit the Theme Shop to purchase additional designs. Sadly, we don't get the nearly 50 themes that Japan was promised — we'll have to settle for a selection of 15, priced either $0.99 and $1.99 each.

In addition to themes, the update also adds the ability to take screenshots of either the top or bottom Home screen by pressing Y and either Up or Down on the D-pad. New SpotPass notifications now generate a text bubble indicating the new information before you even enter the Notifications menu. The eShop has been tweaked a bit to make accessing demos, videos, user reviews, and more even easier. Finally — and this is ultimately a minor thing, but cool nonetheless — certain menu items like System Settings and the eShop icon that couldn't be placed inside folders before can now be placed inside folders.
