Final Fantasy 15’s Battle System Sounds Like a Blast

October 2, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

The battle system in FFXV is more action-oriented than previous Final Fantasy titles.

Following the release of new real time gameplay footage from Final Fantasy 15, which features the game’s protagonist Noctis fighting on the battlefield, Japanese gaming news website Gematsu has translated the presentation, which featured Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata providing information about the game that he was unable to fit into his TGS 2014 presentation.

Tabata provided a detailed exaplanation of the battle system and the various environments in which players will find themselves wandering through in Final Fantasy 15.

“When you continue to hold down the guard button, you can basically auto-guard and evade, but it consumes MP,” he said. “You can’t infinitely evade. You have to think about timing, when it’s a good idea to attack or evade.

“Also, you aren’t invincible. There are attacks you can’t avoid. In those cases, there are also essential technical evasion methods.

“When you push the attack button, you invoke the standard combo. You can change the actions by using it in coordination with the directional buttons. The actions change depending on your circumstances—things like whether you’re guarding and whether the timing is right, or if your companions are nearby.”

Tabata also said that players won’t be able to switch characters.

“Everyone on the development team thoroughly looked into an Active Cross Battle system that made free use of attack, guard, and co-op functions, but as a result they arrived at the conclusion that changing characters would be too difficult,” he said. “In order to create a new and interesting battle system, we ended up not being able to put in the character switching.”

Final Fantasy 15 is set for release on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A demo code for the game will be bundled with Final Fantasy Type-0, which comes out in March 2015.
