Project Morpheus Will Change Games the Way Sound Changed Movies, Says Sony

September 24, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Virtual reality will quite literally be a game changers according to the Oculus rival.

Project Morpheus is set to be a game-changer on the same scale as the introduction of sound altered the movie landscape forever, according to Sony.

During a talk at DICE Europe today, which was attended by Polygon, Sony's Dave Ranyard asked whether VR could be a disruptive technology and commented,"I think it is, I think it could be. All the ingredients are there."

Alluding to the change which came with the end of the silent movie era, Ranyard quoted Mary Pickford, one of the founders of United Artists during that period, who said "Adding sound to movies would be like putting lipstick on the Venus de Milo."

Ranyard believes VR can change how we interact and entertain ourselves in the same way that TV revolutionised home entertainment but cautions that these are still very early days. While there's no standard for VR technology today, he believes it's only a matter of time.

In making Project Morpheus for PS4, Sony collaborated with NASA on a demo which takes users to Mars and Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has said, "[Project Morpheus] is a big part of the future of PS4 but on the other hand, PS4 could be part of the future of Project Morpheus. You know when you talk about VR, the possibilities are infinite."

The company plans to make Project Morpheus "affordable" but has yet to confirm release plans or prices for consumer use.
