This week’s press release for new Nintendo downloads has revealed that the original Disney Infinity is now free to download on the Wii U eShop. This is not the first free download on the platform (Zen Pinball 2 and Tank! Tank! Tank! are both also free downloads), but this is definitely a smart move on Disney's and Nintendo's part.
Originally released in August 18, 2013, Disney Infinity is an open sandbox action adventure game, which requires physical toys so that you can unlock characters, levels, and other elements. The game has sold three million units since release.
Prior to this, Disney Infinity for Wii U was only available in retail stores, as part of the Starter Pack. That pack also came with the base, as well as toys for Captain Jack Sparrow, Mr. Incredible, and Sulley.
Prior to this, the game was released as a free download for Windows. This version originally only had Toy Box mode, but the six Play Sets in the console versions were added later via patch. The new digital Wii U version has the Toy Box and all the Play Sets.
This digital release also comes a month beforeDisney Infinity 2.0, which will come this September 23. For families and players who are looking to upgrade to the new game, this gives them the chance to bequeath their older toys and bases to relatives and friends, or maybe sell them, so that new players can try it out for the first time. This is a chance for some Wii U owners to get a free game as well.
This is nothing but a win-win for current and prospective Disney Infinity players. If it becomes popular, Disney may release the game as a free download to other platforms as well.
