Super Smash Bros. 4: 3DS Version Has a Game Boy Stage

August 8, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Looks like we have this sequel’s Flat Zone!

Today, director Masahiro Sakurai revealed yet another 3DS-exclusive Smash stage: the Game Boy! And if you turn up the 3D slider, the casing will be raised away from the screen, making it look like you're playing an actual Game Boy. This news was covered very briefly in our weekly Smash round-up, but I thought you'd like to see it in greater detail.

This level is reminiscent of Mr. Game & Watch's Flat Zone stages in previous Smash installments — once you step beyond the border, you'll be in danger of dying. The main difference is that the Flat Zones were rectangular while this one is square, which ought to make battles more tense as death comes easier. The above was the only image Sakurai shared, but I predict that the screen will cycle through various famous Game Boy titles, like Super Mario Land and (of course) Kirby's Dream Land.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS arrives on October 3, with the Wii U version coming later in winter.
