Sonic-Inspired Freedom Planet Is Now Available on Steam

July 22, 2014 by Tony Ponce

The Kickstarted Sega Genesis throwback brings back Saturday-morning fun.

Another Kickstarted videogame project clears development and makes it onto digital shelves! This time, it's GalaxyTrail's Freedom Planet in the spotlight. The game released onto Steam yesterday, July 21, so if you are a fan of Sega Genesis era platfomers, plunk down the $14.99 asking price as soon as you can.

Freedom Planet stars an anthropomorphic cast, much like the kind that dotted that platforming landscape in the early 90s. The inspiration from Sonic the Hedgehog is obviously in both the look the how it plays, but the game throws out a wide net to pay tribute to many Genesis classics, like Ristar, Gunstar Heroes, and even a bit of Rocket Knight Adventures. There's also a really beefy Saturday morning-esque narrative with tons of voiced dialog — something about robots and the Kingdom Stone or whatever — but you can enjoy the game itself just fine if you feel that extra content is superfluous.

More updates will come to the game in the future. For now, go grab Freedom Planet from Steam.
