Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Could Come to PS4 and Xbox One

July 7, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Gearbox is waiting to see how the last-gen version is received before deciding on a port.

While Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel isn't currently coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, Gearbox isn't ruling out the possbility should the game prove sufficiently successful on last-gen consoles and PC.

The Pre-Sequel is being primarily developed by 2K Australia with franchise creator Gearbox offering creative input to the co-op focused shooter set between the events of Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2.

Set on Pandora's moon, the Pre-Sequel focuses on the rise to power of Borderlands 2's primary antagonist, Handsome Jack.

Speaking to gamereactorTV, Tony Lawrence of 2K Australia commented that while Borderlands on new-gen is currently on the cards, it's not out of the question:

"I guess we're full on developing the PS3, 360 and PC game, and we believe in that too.

"All the Borderlands 2 players are playing on those consoles. That's the choice they've got. So we want to reward those guys. If fans say 'hey, we'd really like this on a next-gen console', well, we'll think about that, but right now we're concentrating on the consoles we know."

Matt Armstrong, Gearbox's Borderlands franchise director added:

"The vast majority of our fans still have their Xbox 360 [or PS3]. The other thing is it's the middle game in a trilogy. Moving it on to next-gen and requiring people to buy new hardware to play the middle entry in a trilogy feels a little disingenuous and we sort of want to respect that.

"As we said, one day maybe, I don't know. We'll think about that, see how people react to the game, how much fun they have and whether or not everyone moves on to the next gen fully next year. For now we're pretty happy with our choice and I think people are going to be to."

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has previously said that the number of last-gen consoles is the reason why the Pre-Sequel is skipping PS4 and Xbox One, noting that fewer of those systems have been sold to date than copies of Borderlands 2. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is coming to PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 17th worldwide.
