Oculus Announces Its First Developer Conference, Acquires RakNet

July 7, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

The makers of Oculus Rift are going big.

Oculus, the maker of the Oculus Rift, is growing with its recent acquisition by Facebook, and has today made a couple of announcements, including the acquisition of middleware game network technology provider RakNet, which powers cross-platform voice chat, SQL logging, secure connectivity and more for a number of companies.

Players who've experienced Minecraft will be more than familiar with RakNet’s environment, as their clients include Minecraft developer Mojang and Planetside 2 studio Sony Online Entertainment.

In addition to their acquisition of RakNet, Oculus has announced its first developer conference, the Oculus Connect event, which will take place between September 19 and 20 in Hollywood, CA.

The conference will begin accepting applicants from prospective attendees on July 10, and will send out their confirmations the week after.

The actual sessions will be announced as the days draw closer to the show, but it will feature keynotes from Brendan Iribe (CEO), Palmer Luckey (Founder), John Carmack (CTO) and Michael Abrash (Chief Scientist).
