A glitch on the Xbox One store earlier today briefly saw demos for EA Sports' titles UFC and FIFA 14 charge an entry fee of £3.99 in the UK and $4.99 in Australia.
Both prior to and after the glitch was fixed both demos are free. In a statement to Eurogamer, EA commented:
"The price associated with the FIFA 14 and EA Sports UFC demos was due to a technical error. Both demos have now been fixed in the Microsoft store."
Demos for games by other publishers did not appear to be affected by the issue.
While demos help players make up their minds about trying a game, they've proven to be problematic for developers and publishers who can see sales of their games drop by as much as 50 per cent after the release of a demo.
Charging for demos would never be a popular move but given the negative impact on sales it's almost surprising that no one's tried.
