Rainbow Six Siege’s Destruction System Detailed

June 19, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Destruction has always been a big thing in Rainbow Six, and now, Ubi is taking it a step forward.

We have new details for you on the development of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. While Ubi was reticent to give specifics like numbers, they shared a lot of details about the new destruction system coming into the game. We’ll share the details for you here.

The game’s new destruction system was the result of a breakthrough between Ubisoft Montreal and their existing real blast team. When they hit this breakthrough in 2013, after the Rainbow Six team itself went through reshuffling, they instantly decided to use this for the next Rainbow Six game.

The destruction system is now based on the material that you are trying to detonate.  When you use explosives on wood, it breaks apart into splinters. When you try to make drywall explode, it cuts and reacts the way gypsum is supposed to react.

There is also a bullet penetration system that is part of this destruction system. In the same vein, it goes through particular materials in different ways, mirroring how these materials react to bullet penetration in real life. So no, you won’t always be able to use that sniper gun through a wall to take someone out from the other side.

This new destruction system affects defender / attacker interactions. As defenders, you’ll want to think about what materials you place in front of the attackers, and how you can treat them as obstacles for them to get to you.

Subsequently, attackers have a range of tools at their disposal to destroy walls and buildings in different ways. Ubi believes they struck the right balance to even out how the new system can be used to the advantage of either side.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is coming to Windows, Playstation 4, and Xbox One 2015.
