There Are No Dragons in Bloodborne, But There Are Guns

June 12, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki explains the game’s setting to the press.

Bloodborne is the new PS4 exclusive title by From Software, which was given a huge showing at this year’s E3 2014 convention during Sony’s press conference. The game, which is being developed by the makers of Demon’s Souls, takes place in a completely different time and place as its predecessors, set in a Steampunk-inspired setting rather than a medieval one.

Speaking to the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, the game’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained why the RPG isn’t a followup to Demon’s Souls, as it was originally rumored, and what the game is actually about.

“Back in 2012, before the announcement of the PS4, [Sony Computer Entertainment] originally approached us with the idea, ‘would you be interested in making a new game for new hardware?’ so this was never considered as a Demon’s Souls II,” said Miyazaki.

“For us, the idea of new hardware was appealing and I remember feeling enthusiasm from SCE for a new game.”

According to the director, the game takes place in the fictional city of Yharnam, which exists in a different technological era to its Souls counterparts. There are steampunk elements and even gunplay, although the game itself shouldn’t be called a shooter. When quizzed as to how they decided upon the game’s steampunk setting, Miyazaki replied, “There are several reasons, the first of which is the combat.

“We were already thinking of a shift to a combat system where you would enter battle more actively than the sword and shield-based combat of Demon’s. So we adopted the idea of guns, but there was a prerequisite that we didn’t want the game to turn into a shooting game, and the Victorian age fit perfectly. It’s an era where the imagery of old guns still remains.”

Further in the interview, Miyazaki said that there wouldn’t be dragons in the game, although he didn’t rule out other supernatural creatures from appearing.

"I don't think there will be any dragons. However, since just fighting humanoid enemies will get boring, there are other creatures. There are some creatures that not only fit the game's atmosphere, but are very much something our team would come up with, so please look forward to them."
