Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Gameplay Shows Off Use Of The C, Box

June 5, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Don’t mind the video quality (livestream) and pay attention to the gameplay.

We have some new video footage of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, showing off use of the cardboard box.

Let’s get this out of the way; the framerate on this video is really bad, but based on what we’ve seen of this game before, this is probably not on the build. We weren’t able to get much more info from the source, but it seems likely that this comes from Kojima Station, Hideo Kojima’s personal livestream web show. Subsequently, we may be simply getting slow framerates as a result of the stream.

The footage shows Snake peeking out of a giant metal container, possibly a trash depot. Unless this is again the result of the stream, the demo seems to show Snake’s eyes going in and out of focus, perhaps a new affectation intended to make the game playing experience feel more real.

Snake gets out of the container and continues to sneak around, presumably in the middle of the desert. After shooting a random enemy he takes a box out of his inventory and does his classic sneaking around with it.

From inside the box, Snake scouts out another enemy and demonstrates heat reading abilities, presumably from some special binoculars. He bursts out the box and shoots the target down, and just as abruptly folds back in.

Hiding in the box again, Snake shows off the heat reading ability working through walls, and he sneaks towards his next target. As the target moves towards and then away from Snake, Snake comes out of the box again, signaling the target to raise his hands. He then goes back in and sneaks further, onto a campfire. Finally, he takes off the box disguise (done in an instant) and starts running.

Hopefully, Kojima can share better looking gameplay footage in the near future, but for now, it seems sneaking with the box is augmented well by new abilities. You can watch the full gameplay footage below.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is coming to Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, and PS4.
