EA has confirmed that they are shutting down online capabilities for 50 of their older games, including the Battlefield games. They are one of many companies impacted by Gamespy ending their server hosting.
To be clear, they have worded it in such a way that they are not shutting the door on these games having online in the future, but that’s the follow up message. They were not mincing words on this original announcement about retiring the online for these games. Of course, in the case of games like Battlefield, that means the games are pretty much done.
We won’t name every single game and platform here, but you should know that all platforms are affected, including even mobile games (older ones). We’ll go through the major titles below:
· Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and Battlefield Vietnam
· Bulletstorm
· Command & Conquer: Generals, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
· Crysis, Crysis 2, and Crysis Wars
· FIFA Soccer 08, 09 and 10
· Madden NFL 08 and 09
· Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
· Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Need For Speed ProStreet, and Need For Speed Undercover
· Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2
· Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2.
The shutdown for these games is effective June 30, so if you’d like to take one more run at these games online, you still have a little over a month to play with them. If they do decide to return servers for these games, we’ll make sure to keep you up to date.
