PlayStation Productions has revealed it’s turning Twisted Metal, of all things, into a television show. The writers behind Deadpool are attached as executive producers, while Michael Jonathan Smith, the writer of Cobra Kai, will write the screenplay.
Twisted Metal, while a great series, is not one of the console’s most lively ones — there hasn’t been a new game in the series in almost a decade, unless you count Needles Kane’s appearance in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, described the series to Variety as “one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation,” which … sure, Asad.
From what we can tell of the story, it’s a post-apocalyptic story set in a world of vehicle combat, which sounds a bit more like Mad Max. According to Variety, the show will star “a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown … who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.”
Presumably the “better life” is promised to the outsider by Calypso, the head honcho of the Twisted Metal tournaments in the games, who offers to grant the winners wishes — though perhaps not in the manner in which the winners wish they were granted. While it’s not the most popular of Sony’s franchises currently (sorry, Asad), Twisted Metal does have a number of iconic, memorable characters who would be happy to vent their road rage on the outsider. Needles Kane (a.k.a. Sweet Tooth) is the one they mention in the synopsis, but there’s also the likes of skull-faced biker Mr. Grimm, and the twisted Dollface.
