Zenimax has finally acted on a literally game breaking bug in Elder Scrolls Online that has allowed players to duplicate items indefinitely and make money in-game in the millions. ESO patch 1.04 is removing the patch effective immediately.
The bug was a simple one, and was so basic that some players stumbled across in completely by accident. When you deposit an item in the Guild Bank, the bug allows you to withdraw it over and over again. The shocking thing is the bug was well known for a week now, and was apparently identified since beta, and it was entirely Zenimax's faul that they failed to act on player warnings even then. The bug obviously hurt honest players, some of whom were aware of the bug for almost as long.
The new patch also fixed issues which made characters lose the bank expansions they purchased, as well as a bug that caused latency in social systems when you used guild invites.
This bug is very similar to the one that crippled Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto Online monetization for months. Similarly, we expect Zenimax to eventually lay the law down, identifying those who abused the bug and meting out punishments one way or another. Ultimately, we hope everyone making online games learns the lessons Zenimax and Rockstar had to learn firsthand.
