Some enterprising fans may have unwittingly found themselves the next installment of the Civilization series. If true, the next game is going out to venture where no one has gone before, and you’ll be doing it this autumn.
The name of the new game will be Civilization Beyond Earth. It is comparable to Alpha Centauri in scope, and in a complete break from prior Civ titles, it starts you out on an alien world. There are three alien world types: Lush, Airy, and Fungal.
Civ Beyond Earth will still be about building cities, but compared to previous games, winning the space race is not an ending scenario, but instead the start of a new phase. To start venturing out your planet, you need to build outposts, and when you do get to other worlds and find other civilizations, you can opt to leave them alone, or destroy them.
In fact, as a spin to the formula, one of the ways you can win the game is by getting back to Earth. To do this, you will have to send a satellite to orbit it, and then either come back to it, or bring some Earth refugees to your home world. Elements like Diplomacy, Fog of War, and Relics have also made it to the transition.
If you’re not a core Civ fan, you may not have known this, but the series has almost always had a new installment come out every year. Considering Civ V came out July 2013, it really was not going to be long before the next one was to come out anyway, so, it’s highly likely that this could be it. We don’t have a release date yet, of course, but, based on this tweet from 2K Games ,we won’t have to wait long to find out:
Mark your calendars, strategy fans – tomorrow, @FiraxisGames reveal their new game at #PAXEast, 11:30 Boston time!
