This Star Citizen Dogfighting Module Demo From PAX East Will Wow You

April 11, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

When you get past the spiffy graphics, the game looks amazing fun, and quite a challenge to boot.

Chris Roberts demonstrated the Dogfighting Module for Star Citizen, straight out of PAX East. We have some of the footage that we can run down for you below. Don’t mind the loud endless screaming, that’s just the PAX audience getting hype.

You can tell from the onset that the game is a full sim that doesn’t go on autopilot, since Chris couldn’t even launch the ship properly the 1st time. It may have been a bit embarrassing for Chris to start with, but it proves that point better than if he made a whole speech about it.

When you actually do get the ship off the hangar and out into space, it’s an incredible fighting flight sim. As Chris explains, the game simulates g-force (in outer space, don’t ask why), to the extent that if you switch the camera you can see your playable character actually being affected by it when you move around. The sophisticated HUD shows a simulacrum of your ship, presumably to display structural damage, as well as the array of weapons available to you.

Fighting is fast and furious, and sounds as impressive as it looks. Movement is a major factor in this mode, however, and you get a full range of motion, and camera angles so you can play at your best. The HUD disappears when your camera goes third person, but there will definitely be situations you need to switch to it. You can recreate Asteroids on a whim anytime you want, although mostly you will just be impressed by how good everything looks.

Oh yes, the game looks absolutely glorious, but really, if you’ve been seeing all the previews for this game, this should not be a surprise at all.

Star Citizen is coming to Windows and OS X, presumably this coming 2015.
