Watch Dogs PC Will Only Use Uplay For Activating The Game

April 11, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

It’s a complete one off, which makes us wonder if Ubi isn’t so much worried about piracy as they are about wanting to spread UPlay itself.

Ubisoft has revealed a little something that may soften the blow of using Uplay for Watch Dogs on PC.

They explain the client will only be required to activate the game. After going through activation, you won’t have to log back in to Uplay again. So, Uplay won’t continually be getting in the way of you playing everytime you log back into it.

Still, it’s hard to come out of this statement not feeling pandered to. Uplay is still essentially restrictive DRM that means extra hassle for players. It still indicates a distrust of consumers. One also wonders, given the game will have a huge online component, if Ubisoft could have focused their resources there instead.

Remember, this is Ubisoft’s choice, and given South Park: The Stick Of Truth did not have any kind of DRM, we know that Ubi does not necessarily feel compelled to do this for every game.

Perhaps this works another way. Ubi knows a lot of people will want to buy this game, and subsequently they could be looking at a potential larger userbase for Uplay. So, this could be not about DRM but Uplay itself, and getting it in as many computers as possible, for any number of reasons Ubi wants all of us to have it. What do you think?

Watch Dogs is slated to release to Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on May 27, with a future release coming for Wii U.
