Watch Dogs Has A Bit Of Deus Ex In It

April 2, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Jonathan Morin shares what the two have in common – and where they diverge.

Jonathan Morin continues to drop fresh hints on what we can expect to see in Watch Dogs. It turns out, the game has taken inspiration from a much beloved, open world franchise, that is not Grand Theft Auto (or Metroid, or Metal Gear Solid…).

@OttoSporteman Yep, you can even blow stuff up through hacking without being detected.

What I’m referring to here is the Deus Ex games, particularly with the use of the hacking mechanic. As Morin confirms, stealth gameplay is a possibility, thanks to the hacking mechanic. He gives the example of being able to blow up things without getting detected thanks to hacking. Does this mean Watch Dogs will give us full Deus Ex freedom? Could one finish the game without killing anyone? Probably not, but I bet you Deus Ex fans reading this can’t wait to push the limits now that you know.

@Nerox111 Normal foes die very fast (2-3 bullets if no headshot). But lets just say mean mother****** are better protected. 😉

Going down to more basic conventions, Ubi is definitely not incentivizing pacifist gameplay. It’ll only take two to three shots to take down basic enemies, suggesting that this is not where Ubi wants you to place your attention on. There will be tougher enemies, with better protection, but grunts won’t give you trouble at all.

@GddmnKdsThsDys Its big but Im not into the scale war. Scale for scale is pointless. More interested in the dept/density for a game like WD.

Finally, since we’re talking open worlds for more of these games, Morin claims Watch Dogs is going to be big, but they’re not in a competition to build the biggest. Watch Dogs’ world is built very pragmatically; Chicago will have the level of density necessary to bring Ubi’s vision to life.

So, that’s where we’re at so far. How do you like what’s been revealed so far? The game will be coming May 27 to Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with a future release for the Wii U.
