Interceptor Entertainment Investor Now Also Owns 3D Realms

March 3, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

We finally received the official press release confirming what we needed to know about the recent acquisition of 3D Realms.

We received the official press release confirming the details of 3D Realms’ acquisition. This has cleared up any confusion that was caused by conflicting statements. Please read on below to get all the details.

SDN Invest, a Danish investment firm, has acquired Apogee Software, Ltd. This is the same company popularly known as 3D Realms. SDN Invest is already an investor and part owner of Denmark based game developer, Interceptor Entertainment.

Thanks to the acquisition, Mike Nielsen is now stepping in as new CEO of Apogee / 3D Realms. Nielsen started his career as cofounder of Coolshop, one of the largest European online retailers, and stepped down from that position to found SDN Invest. In this capacity, Mike acquired Interceptor Entertainment, to become that developer’s Chairman of the Board.

This transaction did not involve Apogee Software, LLC, which was founded by Apogee Software Ltd. Apogee Software LLC published the recent Rise of the Triad, and split off from its parent company before this transaction took place.

As noted by one of our readers, our original source yesterday was actually Danish TV channel TV2, posting a report they made on their site. As a result, in spite of some issues with translation, yesterday's original report was mostly true. Since our initial post on this story, Mike has also updated his LinkedIn page to reveal his new position as head of 3D Realms

With this move, Mike has essentially doubled down on game development. Neither 3D Realms nor Interceptor Entertainment are known for console games, and can’t boast the kind of success a Rockstar or Blizzard can, but all things considered,  this is a big deal. This definitely means big things for game development in Denmark, and it could also lead to future games for consoles, and possibly even portables. We congratulate all parties involved and look forward to reporting on their future projects.
