DualSense Confirmed To Not Feature Back Buttons

August 5, 2020 by Dennis Patrick

Don’t expect any additional buttons to be added to the next-generation controller.

The DualSense was one of the first things really unveiled when it came to the next-generation video game console platform. We knew that going into 2020 that both Microsoft and Sony had plans to bring out their next-generation consoles. Sony certainly took a long time to really unveil the PlayStation 5 design despite fans knowing what components were being used inside the system. There’s still plenty of questions left unanswered. But one thing that Sony was eager to showcase was the DualSense.

Unlike previous console iterations, the PlayStation 5 will feature a new controller lineup that doesn’t stick with the DualShock name. Instead, this is a DualSense controller that offers a few bells and whistles that will be new for PlayStation fans. For instance, the PlayStation 5’s DualSense will feature haptic feedback which is an advanced rumble system. It’s said that with this rumble system is placed, developers can give players different sensations when traveling on certain terrains or even when a weapon clashes against particular objects.

Another key component that will make the DualSense feel a whole lot different compared to the DualShock is the resistance triggers. These developers working on the PlayStation 5 can make it so that the triggers are a bit harder to push down. One of the examples we’ve seen so far from Sony is a player drawing back a bow which would feel a bit tougher pulling the trigger back. At any rate, this is key components that Sony really wants players to enjoy on the PlayStation 5.

As a result, it’s been confirmed that DualShock 4 controllers won’t work on PlayStation 5 video game titles. Instead, the system will only allow DualShock 4 to be played when gamers are going through a PlayStation 4 video game title. Now a new shred of news may have some fans a bit disappointed and that’s the DualSense doesn’t feature any back buttons. If you were holding out hope that the DualSense had a couple of additional buttons like some of the more expensive pro controller alternatives then it looks like you can cross that feature off the PlayStation 5 standard controller.
