Developers Most Interested in PS4 While Wii U and 3DS All but Ignored

February 18, 2014 by Stephen Daly

PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 are all more popular than Nintendo’s platforms.

The Games Developers Confernece polled over 2,600 game makers for its second annual State of the Industry Survey ahead of the conference's start in early March and found that the PlayStation 4 is the console most developers are planning to release their next game on.

While mobile and PC dominated with both achieving more than 50 per cent support (developers could choose all the platforms their next game is heading for), the console space was a decidedly different matter.

19.66 per cent of developers are targeting the PS4 which is the most popular console followed by 16.95 per of developers who are aiming for Xbox One.

Worryingly for Nintendo, however, is the fact that the PS3 (6.06%), Xbox 360 (6.13%), and PlayStation Vita (7.47%) are all more popular with developers than its own offerings of the Wii U (4.42%), DS (0.50%), 3DS (1.90%), and Wii (0.95%). Nintendo has traditionally struggled to garner support from third party developers and given low sales of the Wii U it's unlikely that they'll have a great deal of success soon.

Ubisoft, one of Nintendo's key thid party partners, recently delayed Watch_Dogs on the console meaning it will be released after the other platforms.

Sony announced today that 5.3 million PS4 systems have been sold since the console launched last November meaning the company is well ahead of its planned target of five million by the end of the current fiscal year on March 31st. The success of the PS4 so far may sway more developers to bring their games to the console.

The Survey also found that the majority of developers are now self-funding their own games.
