Joey ‘Mr. Wizard’ Cuellar revealed the lineup for the upcoming EVO for 2014 on livestream. This may be the first time they have two games in said lineup that have caveats. We have the games and details for you below.
Straight up, these are the games confirmed for the tournament this coming July 11 to 13, in LVH Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada:
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
- Injustice: Gods Among Us
- King of Fighters 13
- Killer Instinct
- Blazblue Chrono Phantasma
And the two games that have caveats but have designated slots? Ultra Street Fighter 4 and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Ultra Street Fighter 4 has to release as scheduled this coming June, so that competitive players have time to play it and prepare for the tournament. In the case of Melee, a spot has definitely been reserved but EVO is still in discussions with Nintendo for approval.
Now, a few good games had to be dropped off the official tourneys, but the biggest omission here is Tekken. The EVO team claimed that interest in Tekken has dropped off, but more importantly, they made the call not to include Tekken while it seems the series is in flux from having a new sequel. These points may be arguable, but this is where the organizers stand.
The EVO team has also chimed in on the recent controversy Kokonoe controversy in Blazblue. They have received word a patch is coming from Aksys to rebalance the game so a ban will not be necessary.
Ultimate MvC 3 will likely once again take up the most livestream coverage, as they have decided it will be 3 out of 5, as long as they don’t get too many entrants.
Since this year is Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo’s 20th anniversary, the Tournament of Legends will be back, and EVO will host related SSF2T tournaments around the world.
In fact, EVO will allow for a number of side tournaments, space willing, since they are bringing back Bring Your Own Console, as well as the developer panels. Combo videos and exhibition matches are also under consideration, even though they aren’t scheduled.
