Cliff Bleszinski, the veteran developer behind the Gears of War franchise, will have no involvement in Black Tusk’s new take on the franchise.
The Epic figurehead departed the company in 2012, taking a leave from an industry that he’s invested most of his adult life into. He still has plenty of game ideas, and he’s been periodically Tweeting concept art of a piece of software that we can expect down the line. However, Bleszinski felt it necessary to let the millions of Gears of War fans know that Microsoft’s next move with the series will be one he won’t take part in.
“My headspace is in the future now, not the past. I have come to realize that until you give people something new to focus on they will obsess about the past,” he wrote. “These recent events have steeled my resolve to make something entirely new.”
Bleszinski noted that Microsoft’s Phil Spencer contacted him about the transaction before the news went public, which was something the former Epic man appreciated. And yet, a new game set in that particular universe is not something he wants to jump back into.
