UPDATE 3: GameStop's removal of Watch_Dogs for Wii U in both the US and Italy was the result of a website glitch according to Kotaku. The game remains available to pre-order for the platform.
UPDATE 2: Kotaku sources have told the site that US GameStop stores have cancelled pre-orders for Watch_Dogs on Wii U. Ubisoft has declined to comment on the speculation regarding the status of the game on Nintendo's console.
UPDATE 1: Joystiq reports that GameStop Italy has issued a statement on the reports commenting: "This information is wrong, tomorrow the reservation[s] of Watch_Dogs will restart." It's unclear what caused the suspension of pre-orders for the title however.
ORIGINAL STORY: GameStop Italy has informed customers that Watch_Dogs has been cancelled for Wii U.
Nintendo blog Wiitalia first reported the rumor when one of its readers informed the site that his pre-order was no longer available. The customer was advised to move his deposit to another product and was told Ubisoft had cancelled the Wii U version of the game when he queried the reason for his pre-ordering being unavailable.
Several says later another GameStop store told him that it was not possible to pre-order the game as Watch_Dogs on Wii U was not included in the shop's database.
Wiitalia phoned multiple branches of the retailer to enquire as to the availability of Watch_Dogs on Wii U and all stores queried informed the site that the game would no longer be coming to the platform.
Sales of the Wii U, which are projected at just 2.8 million for the current fiscal year compared to original estimates of 9 million for the same period, were said to have played a part in the decision.
Ubisoft had been a key supporter of the Wii U during its release period with launch title ZombiU representing one of the console's key third party titles.
In July of last year Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot revealed that ZombiU fell far short of making a profit. Guillemot added that the company would monitor the Wii U's performance during Christmas 2013 before making a decision on whether to continue support ing the platform and Nintendo's recently announced hardware sales forecasts may have convinced Ubisoft to move away from the platform.
Another Ubisoft game, Rayman Legends, was initially intended as a Wii U exclusive but was delayed in order to develop ports for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PS Vita. The game will launch next month on PS4 and Xbox One.
Following reports that an anonymous EA insider told CVG over the weekend that Wii U was "dead" to the publisher, the company's COO Peter Moore tweeted today that "[Nintendo] never have been, and never will be, 'dead' to EA." EA currently has no confirmed games coming to the platform which the company's senior software engineer Bob Summerwill branded "crap" last year.
Ubisoft has yet to comment on the status of Watch_Dogs on Wii U.
