Next Smash Bros. to Change Edge-Hanging Rules

January 22, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Numerous changes coming to key Smash Bros. technique the series’ creator has revealed.

The next Smash Bros. title will alter rules regarding edge-hanging, a technique which allowed expert players to obstruct their opponents.

Having smashed their opponent into the air, gamers could drop off of the stage and hang onto a ledge which prevented the opponent from grabbing on in order to return to the stage.

Players blocked from returning in such a manner would fall off the screen, losing a life. The blocking player would return to the stage.

Series' creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed the change in a Miiverse update and commented on the image at the top of this post saying:

"There are many changes being made to attack and defence options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab."

Sakurai went on to explain how this process works, adding; "Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge."

In past titles the speed with which characters could return to the stage was determined by their damage. If their damage was higher than 100% their recovery was slower but Sakurai says that this too has changed.

Earlier this week Sakurai hinted that the game might have a single player mode.
