Major Xbox One Update Looking to Fix Hidden Social Features

January 9, 2014 by Josiah Renaudin

The Xbox team won’t be happy until the interface of the Xbox One is as smooth as it should be.

Chief product officer Marc Whitten isn’t some suit with no experience in the Xbox trenches. He understands the ins and outs of Xbox Live, so when the fans say something about the Xbox One interface isn’t working, he takes it pretty seriously. Speaking to Engadget about consumer feedback, Whitten revealed that his team has plans to consolidate features like Friends Lists, Parties, Avatars, and Achievements into a much more visible place.

"The feedback we've gotten is pretty valid; some of the social stuff is hidden or harder to use than it was on the Xbox 360,” he said. “So you're gonna see us come out with an update where, well, we're going to fix those things. As a person who's been pretty involved in building Xbox Live for the last decade, I take it pretty seriously when people say it's harder to get into a party, and the defaults aren't right, and I don't like the model.”

He and the Xbox One team have plenty to be proud of. Selling more than three million consoles in just over a month’s time is a true achievement, but Whitten knows he can’t be satisfied until the fans are satisfied.

“Let's take an update and really go through a big list of what we're hearing from customers, what we know is broken with the architecture, areas that we want to improve or complete,” he continued. “I think that's a theme you'll really see us push on — that Live experience."

Look to see Live grow in the coming weeks.
