Turtle Rock Reveals Upcoming Co-op Shooter, Evolve

January 9, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Play the alien monster or its hunters, across four different classes, in lush, dangerous forests.

Turtle Rock has shared new details on their upcoming alien hunting co-op shooter, Evolve.

Evolve will have the four requisite shooter classes, in this case named assault, medic, support, and trapper. The game will feature heavy coop play between different classes to take down an alien, which can also be controlled by a human player. The alien can precipitate (fakey, video gamey) evolution by eating the wildlife that’s found in the game maps. Every time the alien eats it gets stronger and more aggressive, until it has fully evolved and can take out all human players, aka the hunters, to win. The hunters need only kill the alien to win, so the sooner they find the alien, the better.

Guns have unlimited ammo, but will have other limitations, such as cool-down. Class skills will distinguish between the players further. Assault class gets a shield and damage focus, while support class can help raise their teammates’ stats. Trappers have a special trap called the ‘mobile arena’, while the medic has a healing medical gun to go with their sniper rifle. They also get trank guns and bear jetpacks. These jetpacks work automatically and will allow you to dodge if you press the jetpack button twice.

One of the first aliens you will face is Goliath, who can grow to as much as 30 feet tall, and is parts ape, snake, and xenomorph. It can punch and climb walls at the start, but will add two skills when it reaches level one, and an additional skill with each level it upgrades to. These skills include breathing fire, leaping long distances and throwing rocks. Hunters will also fight the same wildlife the aliens use to upgrade themselves, and these can grow as tall as Goliath.

When it is ready to finish the evolution process, the alien will enter a coccon state. While cocooning it is prone to attacks, so you better hit it with all you’ve got before it ends.

Finally, Turtle Rock has revealed one planet in Evolve, named Shear. This is a relatively small reveal, as players will just be using Shear to hunt aliens, fight humans (as the alien player), or remove barriers. I wonder how big Evolve’s game world will actually be? Evolve is slated for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Steam, and will be published by Take-Two Interactive.
