The focus of the early PlayStation Now talk has been PlayStation 3 games. Players willing to either stream individual games or pay a subscription fee will be able to enjoy some of the best content the last generation has to offer without receiving a physical disk in the mail, but there are much bigger plans in the works for this innovative project. As long as your internet bandwidth is sufficient — Sony recommends a 5 Mb/second minimum – PlayStation Now will eventually support PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and even PlayStation 4 games.
Sony Computer Entertainment vice president of marketing, John Koller, spoke to Polygon about the streaming service’s capabilities, and how he believes the latency will be of little issue when Now begins to roll out.
"We've come to a point where we feel very comfortable with the technology in terms of the latency and the types of games that are playable [through PlayStation Now]," Koller said. "PlayStation 3 is the tip of our spear in terms of software because we believe it's still very current and has the largest library.
"The goal is trying to get a wide variety of quality and quantity of types of games.”
The beta for PlayStation Now will arrive at the end of the month, with the actual paid service expected during the summer.
