Microsoft has announced that over three million Xbox One consoles were sold in the 13 launch territories for the system by the end of 2013.
Writing on the Xbox Wire Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business for Xbox welcomed the news saying:
"Over 3 million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 13 countries before the end of 2013. It’s been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November.
"Since our launch, demand for Xbox One has been strong, selling out throughout the holidays at most retailers worldwide. We are continuing to work hard to deliver additional consoles to retailers as fast as possible."
On December 3rd Sony announced PS4 sales of 2.1 million – the latest figures available for that system – while Microsoft reached two million by December 11th meaning they sold one million more consoles in 20 days.
Presumably we'll hear news from Sony at the Consumer Electronics Show this week regarding updated PS4 figures but with the console available in over 30 countries compared to 13 one would assume Sony has an advantage unless production and shipping issues have cropped up.
Either way, it's an impressive achievement by Microsoft.
