PSN Experiencing Significant Latency Since The Holidays (UPDATE: Issues Are Fixed!)

Sony claims PSN’s downtime on Christmas was resolved on the same day. Now, they are dealing with latency issues dating from at least the 27th.

UPDATE: Playstation Support verified with me via Twitter that the latency issue has already subsided, presumably as rationale for the support page being taken down. I also verified days after the fact that they did acknowledge these issues on Twitter since they started on the 27th. Playstation Network seems to be experiencing significant latency issues dating from December 27. As of today, they are still working on resolving said issues.

Many Playstation owners are hitting up the AskPlaystation Twitter account about problems related to connecting to the internet, connecting to PSN, creating new PSN accounts, updating their Playstation 3 systems, logging in with their PSN IDs, viewing the status of their Friends lists, disconnecting in the middle of playing games over a network, even playing newly purchased games for the first time, like The Last of Us and Gran Turismo 6.

To be clear, PSN itself is still online. Sony’s official Playstation Support site indicates that they have stayed online (not going into Maintenance) since Christmas Day. This distinction is noteworthy because several services, such as Party Chat, Netflix, and others, seem to still be usable. It also seems that not all Playstation owners were affected with this issue.

I think Sony needs to release an official statement about these ongoing PSN latency issues. At the very least, they should do so so that their support account didn’t have to repeat themselves so much. We realize it’s not always possible, but it would also be helpful if they gave an explanation on why these issues are ongoing, days after they claim to have put PSN back online.

Sony gamers may have learned to take server and maintenance downtime for granted, but it’s important to hold them accountable as much as any other company. Even more so, since many users pay for these PSN services they can’t access right now.
