Destiny Could ‘Require’ Coop to Complete Bungie Hints

December 16, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Some ‘non-competitive’ missions in the game need you to buddy-up.

In a GameInformer interview Bungie's Jason Jones revealed that Destiny players will pretty much have to team up with other gamers in order to complete the final stages of the game.

"We describe it in a lot of ways as sloping the floor towards socialization, without putting a requirement on it,. I would say that there's some sort of – if you wanted to talk about it in MMO terms, you'd say 'end-game activities', but some of the most intense non-competitive activities in the game do require cooperation. They require a group of players to tackle at once.

"I guess at some variable, distant endpoint we are going to say, 'Yeah, if you show up at this door, and you don't have five friends, you're not going to be able to succeed,' but the core experience that solo players have enjoyed in shooters, they're going to be able to get that, and we're going to pull many of them into social experiences as well."

This information comes after Bungie earlier said it was possible, though less fun, to play through the entire game alone. In July the studio commented:

"As for playing solo, this question still comes to us a lot, and we're happy to answer it again. The company you keep, the challenges you tackles, the war you wage will all be products of the choices you make.

"If you never want to have a cooperative or competitive expericence in Destiny, and if you want to experience every cinematic in private, you'll have the option. We believe you'll be having way less fun, and we think you may find it really difficult to resist the pull of our cooperative vortex, but when we say we're buidling activities for every mood, that includes players who don't want to party up."

Destiny is set for release in September 2014 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The beta will launch first on PlayStation platforms.
