38 Studios Auction Claims no Buyers for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Amalur MMO

December 13, 2013 by Andrea Castellano

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and the MMO fail to find buyers at the auction.

In an auction held earlier this week to liquidate the 38 Studios and Big Huge Games assets, both Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and the Amalur MMORPG, codenamed Copernicus, failed to find buyers.

GameSpot explains that the auction for Reckoning let buyers create a sequel for the IP, while other unsold assets included the engine and property rights for Catan – a video game version of a strategy board game.

The auction did sell some items including a bundle of the Rise of Nations and Rise of Legends games and IP, and a trademark for the Big Huge Games name. Richard J. Land, the state of Rhode Island's attorney, explained that the auction collected $320,000, with unstated buyers.

38 Studios and founder Curt Schilling spent as much as $133 million before declaring bankruptcy. The state of Rhode Island awarded Schilling and his studio $75 million in tax payer money to fund the project.

Land says despite the unsuccessful auctions, he continues to negotiate to find a buyer for the Amalur IP.
