Supermassive Games Refutes Amazon, PS3’s Until Dawn Still In The Works

December 13, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

The developer released classificatory statements after the retailer sent out emails explaining preorders were cancelled.

Amazon has been emailing customers explaining that upcoming Playstation 3 game Until Dawn has been cancelled. However, developer Supermassive Games has clarified that the title remains in production.

Announced August of last year, Until Dawn was planned to be a horror title in the teen horror vein. Yes, literally like Night Trap. You join seven teenagers to a trip to a remote mountain to commemorate the passing of a friend. However, during your stay, the power goes out and you lose contact with the outside world. The game was going to use Sony’s answer to the Wii’s motion controls, the Playstation Move.

Last November 7, Supermassive confirmed that production of the game was going very well. At the time, they also did not clarify if the game was going to continue to exclusively use the Playstation Move for controls. They also did not share any information on a possible release date.

Amazon’s email explains that they have heard from the manufacturer of the game that Until Dawn has been cancelled and will no longer be available for purchase. Based on the email, Amazon has cancelled preorders of the game from their store.

Since Amazon’s email came out, Supermassive has clarified that the game continues to be in development. They are now making it clear that the game is no longer going to make a 2013 release. They also acknowledge the dearth of information on the game’s progress is frustrating, but all they can do is give assurance of the game’s status. Finally, Supermassive explains that they hope to share more information next year.

It should be more common knowledge that Sony has cancelled many promised projects for the Playstation 3, including The Agency, Eight Days, Eyedentify, and so forth. We don't know where Amazon received their information, but they were unintentionally given good reason to doubt it was still in the works since we have not been given much information about the title still.

With Playstation 4’s release, the future of upcoming 1st party PS3 titles is necessarily put into question. I don’t know if anyone is really looking forward to Until Dawn, compared to, say, The Last Guardian, but it seems there is life in the game, and the console yet.
