Sonic The Hedgehog Pulls in $58M Opening Weekend at the Box Office Surpassing Detective Pikachu

February 19, 2020 by Nick Biazzo

Certified fresh too!

Now that the long weekend has concluded, the box office numbers for the movies releasing over the weekend have come out and Sonic the Hedgehog has come out on top with a whopping $58M weekend.

Sonic the Hedgehog has pulled in a large margin of profit over the weekend making it the most profitable video game adaptation of all time, surpassing last year’s Detective Pikachu which released to a $54M weekend. The success of the movie comes a bit of a surprise, however, after all said and done, the late in the game redesign of the titular character, Sonic may have something to do with the recent success.

Director Jeff Fowler took to Twitter today to express his gratitude to all who showed up over the weekend and allowing this film to be a record-breaking performance. Check out the tweet down below:

There’s one word in my head this morning and it’s GRATITUDE. THANK YOU to all the amazing people that helped make the #SonicMovie and most importantly thank you to the FANS for sticking with us and delivering an extraordinary RECORD-BREAKING weekend. Much 💙💙💙 to all of you!!! pic.twitter.com/ZrggANo593

The film is currently Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 65% with a total of 164 reviews. Critics around the web are claiming the adaptation of the popular video game perfectly captures the essence of Sonic while bringing its own stylish identity. Here’s a critic consensus.

“Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy — and a fine excuse for Jim Carrey to tap into the manic energy that launched his career”

Sonic the Hedgehog is currently in theaters now.
