Now that the long weekend has concluded, the box office numbers for the movies releasing over the weekend have come out and Sonic the Hedgehog has come out on top with a whopping $58M weekend.
Sonic the Hedgehog has pulled in a large margin of profit over the weekend making it the most profitable video game adaptation of all time, surpassing last year’s Detective Pikachu which released to a $54M weekend. The success of the movie comes a bit of a surprise, however, after all said and done, the late in the game redesign of the titular character, Sonic may have something to do with the recent success.
Director Jeff Fowler took to Twitter today to express his gratitude to all who showed up over the weekend and allowing this film to be a record-breaking performance. Check out the tweet down below:
The film is currently Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 65% with a total of 164 reviews. Critics around the web are claiming the adaptation of the popular video game perfectly captures the essence of Sonic while bringing its own stylish identity. Here’s a critic consensus.
