Sonic Movie Director Was Afraid Of Fan Reception Before The Big Redesign

February 10, 2020 by Dennis Patrick

Fans really tore into the initial movie trailer.

Everyone knows about Sonic the Hedgehog. For decades, the character has been the mascot for Sega and over the years we’ve received countless Sonic titles and even cartoons. As a result, fans really know who Sonic is so it was quite shocking to see how drastic of an art direction the studio behind the upcoming film took with the character. It was something that fans instantly took an issue with and from the barrage of comments the trailer received, the production team went back to redesign Sonic completely.

It took months to redesign Sonic and it even cost the movie production to be pushed back. However, the outcome was hopefully a more well-received reception over the trailer. As you can imagine, the director behind the film was not resting all that well as Jeff Fowler opens up on the whole redesign process with Digital Spy. According to Jeff Fowler, the Sonic character was something that really gave him anxiety after that initial trailer launched.

Months had passed after the trailer first released and while the crew who had worked on the redesign was given plenty of praise along with great feedback, what really mattered was what the core fans would think of the new design. Thankfully, everything went over well after the new trailer released which certainly put ease to any anxiety he had.

“I think it had been about five months that had passed since the first trailer. We had worked very hard on our updates to the character. It was definitely a little bit of like, ‘Oh man, what happens if they don’t like this? But really, everyone that saw it internally as I was working on the film, just responded so positively. It really felt like, once we shared it with the fans, they would really embrace it and be excited about it. Fortunately, any anxiety I had the night before passed really quickly once it was released. Because, yeah, it was such an incredible feeling to see Sonic 2.0 get embraced the way it was.”

While most video game movie adaptations tend to not do well, the fact that Sonic appeals to a wide audience could prove to be a worthy movie to catch in theaters. Speak info the theaters, Sonic should grace your nearby theater on February 14, 2020.
