Microsoft Won’t Tell Us How Many Xbox Ones It’s Sold

December 4, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

The Xbox One launch has been successful, according to Microsoft, but we don’t have the figures to back that up.

At this time, Sony has sold more than 2.1 million PS4 units – a strong opening number, and one that will continue to grow if Michael Pachter is correct in his estimation of 1 million new consoles produced a month. The company has been open and honest about its sales figures, but when it comes to Microsoft and the Xbox One, the numbers get a little hazy.

“We are humbled and gratified by the overwhelming response from our fans to the launch of Xbox One," said Microsoft corporate vice president of strategy and marketing Yusuf Mehdi in an emailed statement. "Eleven days in we are seeing record breaking sales and are selling every Xbox One we can make. Demand is far exceeding supply in the 13 countries we’ve launched and we are sold out at retailers around the world. We are seeing incredible usage from our engaged fans who have purchased Xbox One with more than 50 million hours spent on Xbox One games and entertainment.”

What does any of that really mean, though? It sounds as if the Nov. 22 release of the Xbox One was a success, but without hard numbers provided, it’s safe to assume that the 2.1 million sold mark hasn’t been reached. Otherwise, you’d expect the company to shout this information from the rooftops.
