PS4 Failure Rate Bumped Up to Around 1 Percent

November 20, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Multiple issues with the PS4 hardware have changed Sony’s failure projections.

Plenty of people are currently sitting at home, enjoying their shiny new PlayStation 4s and considering skipping work for just one more round of Killzone: Shadow Fall. The response to Sony’s next-generation hardware has been positive, but multiple issues have shifted the company’s failure rate estimates from .04 percent to just less than 1 percent.

"There have been several issues reported, which leads us to believe there isn't a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units," SCEA told TechRadar. "We also understand that some units were reportedly damaged during shipping. The number of affected PS4 systems is less than 1 percent, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within the expected range for a new product introduction.

"We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshoot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged."

With more than 1 million PS4’s sold on day one in North America, Sony is off to a strong start. The console manufacturer just needs to make sure that the failure rate stays low so that people can actually enjoy the hardware they purchased.
