Sony has announced a PocketStation App for PlayStation Vita in Japan. The app is available now and is free to download for PlayStation Plus members but the company has not revealed whether a Western release is planned.
PocketStation was originally launched in 1999 as a memory card peripheral for the first PlayStation and offered monochrome mini-games. The device was so popular in Japan that Sony cancelled its rollout elsewhere in the world in order to meet demand at home – the PocketStation was retired in 2002.
Crash Bandicoot 3, Mega Man and Ape Escape are available to PocketStation users today, while Dokodemo Issho will follow in December.
The announcement follows a bizarre teaser released last week by Sony.
