DualShock 4 Ditches Analogue Buttons, Buttons Aren’t Equally Spaced

October 24, 2013 by Yesika Reyes

Recent reports show numerous changes implemented on the DualShock 4 controller.

Sony's Toshimasa Aoki recently spoke with Venture Beat to discuss some of the changes the company made to the DualShock 4 controller. The changes include the switch from analog to digital and how the buttons aren't equally spaced.

Most gamers might not be aware of this, but the DualShock 3 controller could sense how hard or soft you are pressing a button. This can be likened to how you forcefully tap 'x' to run faster or beat a QTE in-game.

“With the DualShock 3, we were able to get analog data, which games didn’t really use,” Aoki said to Venture Beat. “For DualShock 4, we deleted that, and now it’s all digital. The mechanism inside is a little different, and the data that games get is different.”

If you want to go into further detail, the space between the square and circle buttons are a bit further apart. Aoki mentioned that it was not intentional, and it was only noticed later in the development process.

We also recently posted a video showing how the DualShock 4 works with the PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 4 will be released in North America on November 15th.
