Sony Computer Entertainment is intervening on behalf of Ellen Page, as a gaming site claims they received a takedown request from linking and posting images of a naked model of Ellen, based on her appearance in Beyond Two Souls.
The model was used in a scene in the game, where Ellen is taking a bath and, in cinematic terms, is doing a full frontal. The leak of the model, and images taken of it, is not due to any hack or glitch. It seems people who had access to the Playstation 3 dev kits were able to go free roaming with the camera. This was how they were able to make the leaked images.
Now, EskimoPress is reporting they received a request from SCEE to remove said images, and so they have immediately complied. They also confirmed via follow up that said images are being removed for ‘legal reasons.’
We aren’t privy as to whether Ellen’s in-game model is based on her physically, as is the case with Stephanie Joosten and Quiet from Metal Gear, or if they only used her face and made a CGI model on their own. It may also be too speculatory to assume that Ellen was not aware that all this was not possible from the work she did with Quantum Dream.
EskimoPress believes the requests to remove the images are directly connected to Ellen Page herself, and that’s highly likely. For those who are unaware, Ellen is a self avowed pro-choice feminist, and is rapidly becoming well-known for unabashedly talking politics in interviews. Gamers should still remember very well when she accused Naughty Dog of taking her likeness as well.
For sure, Sony, Cage, Page and Quantic Dreams will want to distance themselves from this as soon as they can, but nothing that has been posted online every truly disappears. Is there actually any ongoing litigation behind this? This may not be the last we hear about this ugly incident.
