Good news for Xbox Live Gold account owners, as Microsoft has confirmed on their official blog that Games With Gold will now be an ongoing program.
Games With Gold is Microsoft’s answer to Sony’s Playstation Plus Instant Games Collection, offering two free Xbox 360 games to play and keep permanently. When it was originally announced last June, Microsoft only promised that it would be ongoing until the end of the year. Microsoft cites surveys among Gold users that an overwhelming 97 percent approve of the program, and with this in mind, they have decided to bring it forward.
What’s interesting is Microsoft’s choice of wording in announcing this as an ‘ongoing benefit’ and not a permanent feature, or something across those lines. I suppose it would be expecting too much for Microsoft to make such promises, since that would eventually result to them giving Gold users the entire Xbox 360 library, but perhaps such caveats are simply necessary given the nature of the promotion.
To help sweeten the pot, the next game available for the program is the megablockbuster known as Halo 3. The 2007 installment of the epic introduced support weapons, the Forge, new vehicles, user generated content, and more. Master Chief rallies the troops in a final effort to stop the High Prophet of Truth, unsuspecting of another pending threat, and what sacrifices he will have to take to save humanity.
Considering the criticism Games With Gold has received before, ponying up their star franchise on the program is a good way to do good by the loyalists. We have yet to see the best Games With Gold has to offer.
