Hot off the heels of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX, Square Enix today announced Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX, completing the circle of two generations-old Kingdom Hearts games getting the HD Playstation 3 treatment.
The titles on offer this time will be Kingdom Hearts 2 FINAL MIX from the Playstation 2, and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX from the Playstation Portable. Once again, Square Enix is bundling in cut-scenes from Kingdom Hearts Re:coded from the Nintendo DS.
Kingdom Hearts 2 was released in 2005, three years after the original, and expands upon the original with new worlds based on live-action Disney franchises, a darker tone, and fundamentally fixed all the issues from the first game’s mechanics. This game was rereleased with several packages of extra content under the name Final Mix. Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep was a prequel to the entire series, and was actually in development for five years, finally releasing in 2010. The game had a completely different set of protagonists, as well as a new set of game mechanics.
Kingdom Hearts coded had more puzzle elements than other incarnations in the franchise, however Re:coded brought back the franchise’s more action oriented elements. This is another side story which ties in to the events of Kingdom Hearts 2.
As it stands now, the only games in the Kingdom Hearts franchise that have not received the HD Playstation 3 treatment are Kingdom Hearts X and Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, which were released on mobile and Nintendo DS consoles respectively.
Square Enix promised it would give you a taste of what’s to come with Kingdom Hearts 3 with Dream Drop Distance, so between that, 1.5 HD ReMIX and 2.5 HD ReMIX, there’ll be no lack of games to play while waiting for the next generation installment of the venerable franchise.
