Indie developer Vlambeer has renamed its upcoming roguelike-like (that's what they're calling it) game, Wasteland Kings, as Nuclear Throne.
"We will be renaming Wasteland Kings for a variety of reasons that will soon be in the press everywhere," developer Rami Ismail said. "Wasteland Kings, in the future, will be known as Nuclear Throne."
Ismail wrote on the official Vlambeer blog that they received a short e-mail from inXile Entertainment, which is developing the post-nuclear role-playing game Wasteland 2, about possible confusion between Wasteland Kings and their own RPG.
Ismail said that the decision to rename the game was made during a Skype conversation between inXile and Vlambeer.
"We've been through a lot of trouble with people riding on things of ours, and we understand that American trademark law is pretty strict in that not defending a trademark weakens it," he wrote. "We realize that both games are set in a similar setting, that the names are similar and that InXile obviously felt the need to reach out. Although we aren't sure Wasteland Kings and Wasteland are confusing enough for this to be an issue, both us and InXile really don't want to spend development time on arguing over trivialities."
The game formerly known as Wasteland Kings, Nuclear Throne, is set for a Steam Early Access release in early October. The game will eventually be ported to both the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.
