Will Dead Rising 3 be a bone-chilling horror title, or will the Capcom project become nothing more than a comical romp through waves of undead? Really, the developers think that’s up to you, as the player has the option of either soaking in the atmosphere or running through the streets with a shark hat.
Executive producer Josh Bridge talked to OXM about the upcoming Xbox One exclusive, digging into the player choice that will determine the game’s tone.
"We still have humor, but it's really up to you to evoke it," he said. "You can play it straight or you can go totally off the rails. We try to leave it up to you to blur those lines. The stuff we force upon you is: these zombies are; this game looks scary; there's tension; it's up to you to survive. And then it's up to you to deviate if you want."
What Bridge thinks will take the scare factor over the edge is the power of the Xbox One, which provides a much more detailed, authentic experience.
"Being next gen, the fidelity of the graphics and especially the lighting effects mean we can actually make the game lean more towards serious horror," he continued. "Because we can actually make the game lean more towards serious horror because we can put you into dark environments – flickering lights, running around with a torch. Certainly in some areas it gets downright creepy."
Dead Rising 3 will launch alongside the Xbox One Nov. 22.
