CD Projekt Red is a well-known video game development studio from Poland. It’s a group that got their start in game development with the adaption of the novel series The Witcher. Since then the game studio suddenly became a force to reckon with as more gamers sought out with the studio would bring out into the market next. That next IP would be Cyberpunk 2077, a game that would be adapting a board game known as Cyberpunk 2020. This particular board game had plenty of other interest with other development studios, but while the game was never picked up to be adapted, it wouldn’t be until CD Projekt Red expressed their interest.
The creator behind Cyberpunk 2020, Mike Pondsmith, was interviewed with Video Game Chronicles and it was revealed just why CD Projekt Red was given the green light. Apparently, other development studios enjoyed the idea of making a Cyberpunk 2020 adaptation but to Mike Pondsmith, they didn’t get the feel and tone that the game was all about. Instead, they only saw elements that they wanted to dive into in order to deliver a game, but it was clear CD Projekt Red that this was a board game that the developers truly loved.
Apparently, most of the developers played the board game over the years and knew the essence of what made Cyberpunk 2020 special. As a result, the creator behind the IP feels that the group will do an incredible job. Likewise, with the great detail and work that went into The Witcher series likely helped showcase how the developers were serious in taking great care to the IP while providing gamers a thrilling adventure.
