Silive reports that three men have been arrested for impersonating police officers in order to skip the queue for copies of Grand Theft Auto 5 at a midnight launch.
The incident, on Staten Island, involved an auxiliary officer of the NYPD and the son of a retired officer who arrived at GameStop in Staten Island Mall in a police car bought at auction with a "lights-and-siren package installed".
The three men used police badges to pass the waiting line which is said to have consisted of hundreds of people. One of the badges was fake while the auxiliary officer used his own badge – the third man had his father's shield tattooed unto his arm.
Mall officers offered them coffee while the manager of the GameStop store thanked them for turning up to provide extra security.
After showing their badges once more and asking the manager, they were able to buy copies of the game and left the mall. Upon driving away they performed an illegal U-turn in front of an actual, undercover cop in an unmarked car.
The trio were arrested and charged with second-degree criminal impersonation for which they could be imprisoned for a year.
